Topic: Apart from just general nappy info sharing and affinity, we can put our heads together to think about what would be helpful for parents-to-be. For example, more than 3 years after some of us started to put together a demo kit for the Royal Women’s Hospital, they now have somewhere to keep one, and are keen to have our input.

This is an Australian Nappy Network supported get together for people from around Melbourne.

With the support of the City of Melbourne, ANN held an information workshop at Fair@Square today. The weather was reasonably kind, and there seemed to be a good number of people browsing the fair trade, hand made, eco, ethical and organic brands, services and products.

Lucy and Mary volunteered their pre-Christmas Sunday to lend their experience and advice to around 15 or so groups of parents over the hour, with some taking brochures and others entering a prize draw to win some starter nappy packs. Those who won returned thrilled with their luck for the day!

A big thank you again to City of Melbourne for providing an opportunity to help spread the word further about reusable nappies! It’s fantastic to have such a supportive major local Government!

A reminder that the 4^th annual Brisbane Cloth Nappy Expo is just around the corner.

On Sunday November 8^th 2009,

at Mt Gravatt Showgrounds,

from 10am to 3pm,

there will be ten different nappy retailers, all selling their wares.

Not all retailers will have credit card machines so bring some cash as well, and grow your stash.  If you are not in the mood for purchasing, feel free to come along anyway, chat to some people and (if you get there early enough) have some coffee and cake in a corner of the tent.  Or you could bring a friend and introduce them to the wonders of modern cloth nappies.

There will be plenty of other things to look at this year, as the Expo will be held inside the Brisbane City Council’s Green Heart Fair.  Signage will lead you to our expo, but you could also look at the many other sustainability stalls, entertainment, or eat at the parents’ café.

The 2009 Australian Nappy Network Annual General Meeting will be held on

Sunday 29th November 2009 at 9:00pm AESDT.

Members of ANN have voting rights.

If you are not yet a member of ANN, however wish to have voting rights for ANN matters, you can find out more about joining at the Australian Nappy Network website. Applications need to be received by COB 26th November to be processed in time for your membership to take effect before the meeting takes place.

Please pre-register your attendance via email before 26th November.

RSVP with your name, ANN member number, SKYPE username & IP address (click HERE to find out what your IP address is)

The meeting will be held using Skype to enable as many members as possible to join the meeting, vote and count. As the ANN has members and subscribers all around Australia, it is felt that electronic meetings are the most inclusive means possible for holding these meetings. The e-meeting is constitutionally acceptable, provided we have good records of those attending. Skype is free to download and works adequately on even relatively low connection speeds. The meeting will be held using ‘text chat’ (not voip/voice), so you do not need a special telephone, video, microphone or headset. Skype can be downloaded through the following links or at www.skype.com.

For your planning purposes, last year’s meeting took less than 45 minutes.

Choose to reuse at Reusable Nappy Week 2009 – next week!

Next week, parents all around Australia will celebrate the fourth annual Reusable Nappy Week (RNW), presented by the Australian Nappy Network.

This year’s theme is choice, highlighting the huge range of modern, fun, affordable and environmentally friendly options now available with reusable nappies.

The week’s events include sewing workshops, information sessions, nappy displays, and informal morning teas and picnics.

“With so many different fabrics and styles being used in reusable nappies today, events like Reusable Nappy Week are a great way for expectant parents or those new to cloth to work out what will suit them best,” says Kira Jessup, mother of two and national RNW coordinator. “There’s something for everyone!”

“This year, we’re really encouraging parents to take a look at the choices out there. Even if you decide to use reusable nappies only part-time, there’s a significant benefit to your wallet and to the environment.”

Modern reusable nappies do not require soaking, folding or pins, and are often made from sustainable, highly absorbent fabrics like bamboo and hemp. Waterproof outers can be made from polar fleece or polyurethane laminate, which are far more breathable alternatives to old-fashioned PVC pilchers.

Reusable Nappy Week, October 12-18, 2009 and the Australian Nappy Network

-          Reusable Nappy Week (RNW) 2009 is the fourth instalment of this annual event.

-          The Australian Nappy Network (ANN) was established in 2006 to educate the Australian community on the health, environmental and financial benefits of using cloth nappies.

-          Reusable nappies come in four main styles:

• All-in-one or all-in-two nappies, which include absorbent fabrics and a waterproof outer.  Parts may separate for faster drying.
• Pocket nappies, which consist of an inner fabric – usually a stay-dry synthetic – and a waterproof outer, with an opening. Absorbent fabric is inserted into the pocket opening.
• Fitted nappies, which are shaped and elasticated, but need a waterproof cover.
• Flat or prefold nappies, which need to be folded and used with a waterproof cover.

-          Modern reusable nappies are made from fabrics like hemp, bamboo, microfiber and polyurethane laminate in place of cotton and PVC. They fasten with velcro or press-studs and are easy to launder.

-          In Australia alone, approximately 800 million single-use nappies are delivered to landfill sites every year, and they may take up to 500 years to degrade.

-          A basic reusable nappy system can cost as little as $250, with a typical premium system costing around $850. Single use nappies will cost around $2000 for two and a half years per child.

The second Casey Cloth Nappy Expo will be held just prior to Reusable Nappy Week 2009 to kick of the week’s activities in Victoria.  The event, incorporating ‘green kids’ – organic clothing and more – will be held on Saturday 10th October, 10am-4pm, Balla Balla Centre, 65 Berwick-Cranbourne Rd, Cranbourne East. Entry is free!
